Iranians rebel at former President Rafsanjani’s funeral

The funeral of former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has presented a rare occasion for Iranians to express public resistance.

Huge crowds flocked on to the streets of Tehran to commemorate the former insider and founding member of the revolution whose political allegiances shifted in later life towards the reformists.

Rafsanjani died of a heart attack on Sunday (January 8), at the age of 82.

Iran reports US violations to Joint Commission

Iran has reported US violations of the nuclear deal with the P5+1 to a Joint Commission tasked with monitoring the implementation of the JCPOA.
Members of the Joint Commission called for suspension of the Iran Sanctions Act implementation. The US representatives said the current administration has conducted a series of measures to render the Iran Sanctions Act ineffective. The meeting was held in the Austrian capital Vienna. It was the fourth such gathering to review progress of implementing the pact since it came into force in January 2016. The meeting was requested by Iran in December after the US sanctions legislation was renewed for a decade.

“There is a lot of uncertainty because it is such a scarce occurrence,” Chris Hughes, a staff attorney at FairVote, a voting-rights advocacy group, told us.

According to FairVote, there have been 157 “faithless electors” in the history of the U.S. But even that figure is deceptively high. Of those, 71 votes were changed because the original candidate died before the Electoral College cast its votes. In all, the group states, “82 electoral votes were changed on the personal initiative of the elector.” None has affected the outcome of a presidential election.

The most recent example occurred in 2004 when an anonymous elector from Minnesota, pledged to vote for Democrat John Kerry, cast a presidential vote instead for Kerry’s running mate, John Edwards, some believe by mistake. In 2000, a Democratic elector from the District of Columbia declined to cast her vote “to protest the lack of congressional representation for Washington, DC,” FairVote notes.
