Marina, a sexually naive 23 year old woman, lives with her terminally-ill architect father, Spyros, in an industrial Greek town by the sea. Unable to relate to her fellow humans, she lives her life through the wildlife documentaries of Sir David Attenborough, the songs of Suicide and the sex education lessons given to her by her friend Bella. When a stranger comes to town, Marina has her first sexual relationship with him. She later asks Bella to sleep with her father, as a favour for a dying man, whom she duly obliges.

Quentin Tarantino, who was head of the Jury for the 67th Venice International Film Festival, said that the film “grew on us the most, and showed another Greece”. Journalist Shane Danielsen called the film “an intellectually rigorous, quietly wrenching Greek drama”. Peter Bradshaw characterised the film as “an angular, complex, absorbing and obscurely troubling movie”.

His signature style includes beautiful tracking shots as well as the use of popular music of the day, and here Samuel Barber’s majestic Opus for Violin and Orchestra. Besides his two acclaimed semi-autobiographical features Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Long Day Closes, Mr. Davies films include The House of Mirth, The Neon Bible, and his masterful nonfiction exploration of his native city, Liverpool, Of Time and the City.

On March 11, 2011, Japan’s Tohoku coastal region was destroyed by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and devastating tsunami that followed. PRAY FOR JAPAN takes place in the devastated region of Ishinomaki, Miyagi – the largest coastal city in Tohoku with a population of over 160,000 people. Filmmaker Stu Levy – an American living in Japan – filmed the tsunami aftermath during his trips to Tohoku as a volunteer and over a period of 6 weeks, captured over 50 hours of footage. PRAY FOR JAPAN focuses on four key perspectives of the tragedy – School, Shelter, Family, and Volunteers. With each perspective we meet victims who faced significant obstacles and fought to overcome them. Through these four vantage points, the audience is able to understand the vast ramifications of this large-scale natural disaster – and the battle these real-life heroes fought on behalf of their loved ones and their hometown.

Set in the strange and oppressive emotional landscape of the year 1983, BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW is a Reagan-era fever dream inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons. Cosmatos was born in Rome in 1974 to the late Greek movie director (George Cosmatos) and a Swedish experimental artist mother. He spent his early formative years traveling all over the globe before settling in Canada. In 1981, the family lived for a year in Mexico where exposure to the strange local interpretations of American pop culture had a profound and lasting effect on his creative life. Growing up in the isolated suburbs of Vancouver Island during the 80s, he obsessed over the minutiae of heavy metal, fantasy art, and science fiction horror films, which he still does to this day. He then immersed himself in the underground art and music scenes making short films, album covers and music videos with a burgeoning group of influential and groundbreaking artists. Pantos currently lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia.
